I reflect on all the mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and grandmothers who made beautiful things to decorate the lives of their families, sewing in their dreams, hopes and wishes for their families, friends, communities and the generations to come. I am inspired by embroidery made for children's birthday hats and socks, wedding gowns and cloth wrappings for eye glasses, gifts, spoons, needle cases and pillows. Like the fermentation of kimchee-making, I activate ingredients to bubble up with effervescence so that they may weave through the web of time and space to 10,000 ancestors and the countless acts of everyday love, kindness and generosity that led to my existence.

I use Ampersand panels for their environmental commitment, Gamblin paints to support their progressive environmental practices, Utrecht for cadmium-free colors and a few Williamsburg favorites. Safflower oil and brush soap work well for cleanup, but none of my brushes ever get that clean... This is part of the mysterious fermentation of all my paintings.
