My paintings are activated by a feeling of playfulness, joy, anger, longing or adventure. The process involves many discoveries and surprises along the way as each painting ends with its own distinct effervescent flavor. Painting is a fermentation where the seeds or ideas are mixed with a variety of ingredients  including folk art, archeology, archetypes, narratives, philosophy, memory, desire, irony and imagination. My current investigation explores burlap, the material of international exchange that transports military supplies, grain and humanitarian relief. It was salvaged and used by Korean artists post-war in the 1960s and 70s. I pay homage to their resilience, resourcefulness and strength of spirit. I am often inspired by folk art and embroidery as I reflect upon the generations before me. Painting can be a bridge that heals many things including the disconnect of immigration and diaspora.
