Resilience Manifesto: A Tribute to Zo Zayong 2024
This show is a tribute to Zo Zayong’s mission and the resilience of all people living through devastating historical circumstances. Zo Zayong (1926-2000) dedicated his life to saving Korean folk art as it was thrown away in Korea’s rush toward Westernization and modernization after the war, colonial occupation and the collapse of the 500 year Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). Zo Zayong recognized that folk art expressed the imagination, wishes and hopes of countless generations of everyday Korean people which at the time was seen by the ruling elites as low-class, trashy and embarrassing.
